An Asset-Based Approach to Working with English Learners

Please join the Teacher Education Interest Section of MD TESOL for our virtual event, "An Asset Approach to Working with ELs," on Saturday, March 23rd from 10-11am.  

 One of the key recommendations in the November 2022 MSDE report Blueprint for Maryland’s Future: Workgroup on English Learners in Public Schools is the need to support and sustain multilingual learners by promoting an asset-based approach. This approach focuses on identifying and leveraging the strengths and abilities of multilingual learners, rather than viewing their English language limitations as a deficit. In this talk, Dr. Parker will share his ideas and experiences on the benefits and potential challenges of scaffolding from multilingual learners’ native language, culture, and background knowledge to support their English language and literacy development.
