Meet our Keynote Speakers

Dr. Ebony Terrell Shockley is the Executive Director of Teacher Education, an Associate Clinical Professor, and the Diversity Officer at the University of Maryland College Park's College of Education. A component of her work includes directing the Master's Certification Program. Dr. Shockley investigates the academic experiences of children of color and their teachers. She is a counter-narrativist with a research agenda that aims to center and affirm the voices of marginalized learners and their families, particularly highlighting the cultural, ancestral, linguistic, scientific, and historically-divergent knowledge profiles that are respected in their homes more frequently than their classrooms.

Lourdes Ortega is Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University. Her research focuses on adult language learning in classroom settings. She is best known for her award-winning meta-analysis of second-language instruction in 2000, her best-seller textbook Understanding Second Language Acquisition (2009, translated into Mandarin in 2016), and for championing a social justice turn in the study of multilingualism. She is co-editor of the Cambridge Handbook of Bilingualism and author of over 80 other scholarly publications. Lourdes was born, raised, and college-educated in southern Spain, spent a year abroad at the University of Munich in the early 1980s, worked as a teacher of Spanish in Greece for almost a decade, and obtained her doctorate in the United States, the country where she has lived for over 25 years now. She is committed to encouraging connections between research and teaching and to supporting harmonious bilingualism and the well-being of all multilinguals.
